Deacon murder trial postponed to January

POLOKWANE – The four accused in the Deacon murders; Sophie Mmako (51), Lazarus Mahlo (41), Advance Amid (30) and Casper Mudau (35) appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court today.

Mmako made another application for bail on Friday, however, Magistrate Janine Ungerer turned down the application and she appeared alongside her co-accused today.

In their previous court appearance, Mmako and Mudau offered to pay R1 000 bail, but were denied bail. Amid and Mahlo earlier abandoned their bail application.

Each accused faces two counts of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and kidnapping.

Their case was postponed to 28 January 2021 for further investigations.

The four were arrested following a 72-hour activation plan after Lizette and Hettie’s bodies were found on the R37 on the evening of 10 September.

The deceased were attacked in their townhouse in Welgelegen on 10 September, their bodies were found in the back of Lizette’s vehicle after police gave chase and the driver of the vehicle abandoned it next to the R37 road.
 
The bodies also had several stab wounds. The latest investigations show that both women died of strangulation.

Police are still looking for Owen Setsiba/Makutara/Mbedzi (pictured above) and have offered a R250 000 reward to anyone who has valuable information that can lead to his arrest and subsequent conviction.
