[TAKE NOTE] Olifantspoort plant operating at low capacity due to quality of raw water

A rain storm on Monday resulted in a higher mixture of water and mud at the point of extraction. This makes it difficult for the plant to clean and treat the water, explains the Polokwane Municipality.

POLOKWANE – The Olifantspoort plant is currently operating at low capacity following a storm in the area on Monday.

“A report this morning from Lepelle Northern Water (LNW) indicated that the plant is operating a low capacity due to the high level of mud at the point of extraction. The thickness of the mud substance in the water makes it difficult for the water to be cleaned and treated at a higher rate,” reads a statement issued by the Communication and Marketing team at the Polokwane Municipality.

This will affect all areas of supply. LNW has further indicated that they are working on stabilising the situation.

The municipality warns that this situation will add to the water woes in the city and surrounding areas. “The situation will further affect the level of water supply in the city since the Ebenezer plant is also supply lower volumes of water due to the low dam level.”

Residents are urged to conserve water and limit their use to domestic consumption only. Water of gardens is strictly prohibited. Water tankers will continue to supply affected areas.
