Business robber killed following shootout with police near Thohoyandou

The man robbed a foreign businessman's spaza shop, at gunpoint, of an undisclosed amount of cash before he fled the scene on a bicycle.

LIMPOPO – A 27-year-old business robber was fatally shot following a shootout with police in the Saselamani policing area, outside Thohoyandou on Friday, 20 November.

A statement by Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, indicated that the incident happened at Magomani village after the man robbed a foreign businessman’s spaza shop at gunpoint, of an undisclosed amount of cash.

“He fled the scene riding a bicycle and police were notified and followed the man. He managed to hide in a one roomed house and was spotted by police. He fired shots at the officers and they retaliated. He untimely died with gunshot wounds,” Ngoepe said.

Police found a revolver as well as three rounds of live ammunition and the robbed items in possession of the deceased.

Would-be criminals were cautioned by the Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Maj Gen Christine Moralakadi.

Moralakadi said police will not be able to compromise their safety and the public safety when dealing with the violent and serious incidents of crimes.

“The police are still going to deal decisively with all criminals who are trying their luck in terrorising our communities including the business community,” concluded Moralakadi.
