Truck driver arrested after attempting to smuggle explosives into SA

This after a total of 115 units of blasting cartridges and accessories were discovered inside a truck trailer.

LIMPOPO – The police, jointly with the Musina Bomb Disposal Unit, have arrested a 27-year-old man after he attempted to smuggle explosives and accessories into South Africa from Zimbabwe.

The man was caught at the Beitbridge border post  in the early hours of this morning (Friday, 19 November) and according to Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe the man was reportedly travelling to Alberton in Gauteng.

“Upon arriving at the border post the driver was directed towards the searching bay where the members found several packages boxes in the trailer. These where opened and 115 units of blasting cartridges and 100 units of explosives accessories were discovered.”

The man was arrested on the spot, Ngoepe added.

“The origin of the explosives is not known at this stage however, police investigations are continuing.”

The accused is expected to appear in the Musina Magistrate’s Court soon on a charge of possession of explosive materials.

Woman busted for smuggling explosives into SA

Meanwhile in Polokwane, three men and one woman were arrested on Monday, 9 November after they were found to be transporting explosive materials. In an earlier statement Ngoepe explained that their vehicle was stopped by police. “During the search the members found several detonating explosives. The explosives are believed to be the same used to blast ATMs and all three suspects were immediately arrested.”

They have since appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on a charge of possession of explosive materials. The court outcome is not yet known.
