A number of serious crimes were reported across the province since Provincial Police Commissioner Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba launched the 2020/2021 Safer Festive Season Operations at Kranskop Toll Plaza along the N1 on Friday.
Some of the incidents include mob justice in Makhado, the poaching of four rhinos on two separate farms, two murder incidents in Tzaneen and Phalaborwa respectively, a traffic officer who was robbed of his service pistol in Lebowakgomo and public violence in Groblersdal.
It was also reported that 12 people lost their lives on the roads over the past weekend.
Police indeed succeeded with the arrest of 1 849 suspects on various charges of which 617 are illegal immigrants on the weekend.
The annual launch of the provincial Festive Season operations is aimed at ensuring residents and visitors to Limpopo a safer and secured environment during the holiday season, with continuous monitoring of hotspots across the province and on the roads.
The launch was attended by the Deputy Provincial Commissioner responsible for Policing Major General Jan Scheepers, the Deputy Provincial Commissioner responsible for Crime Detection Major General Samuel Manala and the Waterberg District Commissioner Major General Rosina Mulaudzi, the HOD of the Department of Transport and Community Safety, the Provincial Heads, the senior officers from other Districts, Station Commanders, other law enforcement agencies from sister Departments including the Department of Transport and Community Safety.
During his address, Ledwaba emphasised that law enforcement agencies are encouraged to keep the communities safe and secure as mandated by Section 205(3) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.
Ledwaba recognised that serious crimes and corruption remain a priority in terms of the National Development Plan.
He also said an action plan was being followed in terms of dealing with corrupt elements within the organisation and to fully ensure that there is no room for criminals to operate in and outside of the organisation.
He further appreciated the dedication and selfless service to the community by all law enforcement officials and declared the festive season operations in Limpopo to be officially launched.
