Six men nabbed for public violence following the barricading of Leeufontein road

LIMPOPO – The police in Motetema, outside Groblersdal, have arrested six men, between the ages of 31 and 45 for public violence following a violent situation along the Leeufontein road.

A group went on a rampage and barricaded the road with burning tyres, tree branches as well as stones. Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe confirmed the incident in a statement and said the police were notified of the situation, yesterday.

“Police received complaints about a multitude of people who were protesting along the road between Leeufontein and Marble Hall. Police found more than 300 people chanting and forcing motorists to use alternative roads leading to Marble Hall. With the support from the Public Order Police Unit, six men were arrested,” Ngoepe said. 

The situation heavily affected free flowing of traffic and has been labelled an “irresponsible act”.

The Public Order Police Unit is still monitoring the situation, Ngoepe added. He said these continuous acts of violence has enraged the Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Gen Nneke Ledwaba, who has urged the public to process their complaints to the relevant authorities peacefully.

“Those who still continue to perpetrate these type of acts, are going to be dealt with mercilessly and without compromise,” concluded Ledwaba.

Ngoepe said more arrests are still expected and the arrested suspects will appear in the Motetema Magistrate’s Court soon.
