Two white rhino carcasses were discovered on a game farm in the area with bullet wounds and their horns removed

LIMPOPO – A manhunt has been launched by police in Hoedspruit, outside Phalaborwa, following the discovery of two white rhino carcasses.

“The carcasses were found with bullet wounds and their horns removed. They were found on a game reserve in the area yesterday, 16 November,” said Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

The carcasses were discovered following intensified patrols, which commenced in various parts of the game reserve, after gunshots were heard the previous night.

“The suspects are still unknown at this stage and no arrests have been made yet. Anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects involved in this matter, may contact Det WO Johan Chomse at 063 316 9809, or Col Alpheus Mokale at 082 565 6524. Alternatively, contact the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111, the nearest police station or use the MySAPS App,” Ngoepe said.

In a separate incident, another rhino was killed and de-horned on a farm outside Lephalale over the weekend.

“It is alleged that a worker on the farm was patrolling the area when he found the rhino carcass with one horn cut off,” Ngoepe explained.

Anyone who can assist with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects involved in this matter, are urged to contact Det WO Van Heerden at 082 414 2337 or Det WO Van de Venter at 082 872 174.

Police investigations and manhunt are still underway, Ngoepe concluded.
