Covid-19 precautions not adhered to at various political rallies

As government continues to warn citizens to be mindful of Covid-19 safety precautions, social media was abuzz this weekend where little of these precautions were witnessed at both an ANC and EFF rally that took place in Ward 14, in preparation of by-elections.

POLOKWANE – Photos distributed on social media were testimony to the fact that those in attendance did not practice any social distancing, while the majority was not wearing masks and the sheer number of people was clearly in contravention of what is prescribed.

Last week Ledet Spokesperson, Zaid Kalla said that event owners are liable for fines if guests are not adhering to the safety regulations.

From the photos, organisers were clearly not ensuring that Covid-19 precautions are adhered to.

BONUS contacted Jimmy Machaka, the ANC Regional Spokesperson who confirmed that the party hosted a rally.

“The event was structured around 500 attendees, who were provided for in terms of seat allocation, sanitising and marshalls. Unfortunately the number of people in attendance surpassed the provisions that were put in place. It is very unfortunate because we had no control over the people who walked in. We tried our level best to cater for those we had planned for.”

EFF Provincial Leader, Jossey Buthane refuted there being any members of the EFF who did not adhere to the safety regulations. Buthane commented saying that everyone was wearing a mask, practising social distancing and were sanitised regularly.

“The people who were not adhering to the regulations are the ANC, I was personally there and I saw it myself. They even exceeded the number of people allowed at an event.”
