Former attorney granted bail in R6 mil Road Accident Fund fraud case

The man was arrested this morning in Tzaneen and faces five counts of theft.

LIMPOPO – The Directors of Public Prosecutions Limpopo Spokesperson, Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, says a 43-year-old man appeared in the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court today, on five charges of fraud.

Malabi-Dzhangi says the man was arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit earlier today. “He was a practising attorney based in Tzaneen and was struck off the roll by the Pretoria High Court in 2018 for embezzling money from the Road Accident Fund (RAF),” she adds.

The Hawks received a tip-off that the man claimed money from RAF, on behalf of the beneficiaries.

“He used his trust bank account to claim money from RAF and didn’t pay the beneficiaries. He personally and unduly benefited an amount of R6 million,” she explains.

Malabi-Dzhangi says bail was fixed at R10 000, with the condition that the man does not interfere with the state witnesses.

The matter was postponed to 10 December in order to disclose the content of the case docket to the legal representative of the accused, she concluded.
