Committee on expropriation of land without compensation to return to Polokwane tomorrow

The public hearing is scheduled for 11:00 at the Jack Botes Hall, after the previous meeting was marred by disruptions two weeks ago.

POLOKWANE – Parliament has confirmed that the ad-hoc committee wil return to Polokwane tomorrow, 7 November, to initiate and introduce legislation that amends Section 25 of the Constitution.

The amendment will allow for the expropriation of land without compensation, they said in a tweet.

The public hearing is scheduled for 11:00 at the Jack Botes Hall, after the previous meeting was marred by disruptions two weeks ago.

A statement issued by the acting caucus Spokesperson of the ANC, Nomfanelo Kota, following the disruptions, stated that the ANC Caucus in Parliament noted with regret the disruptions by the EFF Capricorn District in Limpopo on Sunday, 25 October.

Kota added that while they (the EFF) claim to represent the aspirations of the people, the disruptions “expose the anarchy and rampant lawlessness that has seen the EFF disrupt private businesses and occupy land illegally”.

“This is a dangerous pattern that seeks to undermine the rule of law and should be dealt with harshly by law enforcement agencies,” Kota explained.

Parliament said in a statement on Monday, 2 November that political parties gave the assurance that their supporters will conduct themselves in a respectful manner that is in compliance with Covid-19 Level 1 regulations.

“The committee also received a request to hold a hearing in the Waterberg district of Limpopo. The committee further resolved that it will not include another district for hearings in Limpopo, as it would open up the way for more requests on hearings in other provinces,” the statement reads.

Dr Mathole Motshekga will chair the hearing.
