Limpopo doctor sentenced to 8 years for the rape of teenage patient

The 55-year-old doctor was arrested in October 2017 for the rape of a teenage girl.

LIMPOPO –  55-year-old Dumisani Chauke, a doctor from Tzaneen appeared in the Nkowankowa Regional Court on Tuesday, 3 November for the rape of a teenage patient.

The court sentenced him to eight years imprisonment, according to a statement issued by Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

The girl, who was 17 at the time, was raped while at a surgery in Nkowankowa on 17 October 2017.

According to earlier reports she visited the surgery for a consultation. “She was placed on the bed for medical examination and only after she experienced pain did she realise that she was being raped. The victim quickly rushed out of the consulting room and went straight home and told her mother.”

A case of rape was immediately opened and Chauke was arrested shortly afterwards. After preliminary investigations the case was allocated to Det Sgt Helray Mmola attached to the Tzaneen Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, whose meticulously investigation into this matter resulted in the conviction and sentencing of the accused.

Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba welcomed the sentence. “We hope that this jail term will serve as a deterrent to all perpetrators of these type of crimes and especially the professionals who are supposed to protect any victim, that crime does not pay,” Ledwaba concluded.
