Blood stocks are critically low
The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has scheduled blood drives around Polokwane throughout November. See the schedule here:
POLOKWANE – The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is calling eligible donors to donate blood to boost the critically low blood stocks in the country. Based on estimated demand 3 174 lives are at immediate risk this week, as blood stock levels are at 3.4 days only. Platelet stock is at 0,2 days, according to figures released on their website.
Less than 1% of South Africans are active blood donors, meaning, they donate blood every 56 days. A unit of blood is a little less than 500ml (your body have on an average 4,5 to 5,5 litres of blood) but last only 42 days of donation. Therefore it is important to donate regularly.
SANBS’ intention is to collect 3000 units of blood per day to ensure a safe and sufficient blood supply. To donate, visit the Polokwane Donor Centre at 153 Potgieter Ave or any mobile clinic. See the schedule below:
