Kgothatso aspires to be the next ‘Cake Boss’

Kgothatso Mathunyane is the proud owner of Yummy Treats, which she founded in July as a means of making a profit during lockdown.

POLOKWANE – Business has since boomed for Kgothatso, who says she loves how at peace she is when she bakes. Eager to learn new recipes, Kgothatso now specialises in cakes, scones, biscuits, cupcakes, donuts, buns and cinnamon buns.

She told BONUS that she didn’t want anything formal when it came to naming her business and that she wanted a funky name that matches her creativity and personality.

“I fell in love with baking because I could embrace my creativity and who I am, so when lockdown started, my mother, Annah, and I would find recipes and try them. It became a success which eventually started my business,” she said.

“I’m a self-taught baker who was fortunate enough to turn it into a ‘side hustle’ and make enough profit for myself. I have also attended a workshop with Judith Mariri of Judy’s Cakes to improve my skills.

She has since become my mentor and guides me through my journey, I’ve learnt a lot from her,” she said.

Kgothatso says baking has become her therapy and because she’s a student and has stress, being in the kitchen allows her to relax. “The look on my clients’ faces when they see their cakes is also priceless. Just seeing that I can make someone’s day with my creativity is what keeps me going,” she added.

Kgothatso aspires to be the ‘Cake Boss’ of South Africa and also hopes to create job opportunities for the youth.

“The change, however small, I make in people’s lives will go a long way. The advice I’d give a young individual or anyone who would like to be a baker is to simply go for it.

“With the amount of people losing their jobs now due to Covid-19, you’ll never know what good can come out of simply selling scones. It’ll make you proud to know that you are your own boss and you earn your own income and can finally afford that pair of shoes you’ve always wanted without having to bug your parents about it,” she advised.
