16 arrested for illegal chrome mining denied bail

The men were arrested outside Burgersfort during an intelligence-led joint operation on 15 October.

LIMPOPO –  The sixteen suspects arrested by the police for illegal mining activities in Driekop appeared before the Praktiseer Magistrate’s court on Monday, 26 October.

The suspects, aged between 19 and 55, were all denied bail and their case was postponed to Thursday, 29 October for formal bail application and further police investigations.

The 16 men were arrested on 15 October during an intelligence-led joint operation conducted by members of the Provincial Organised Crime Unit, the Air-Wing Unit and the Tactical Response Team (TRT).

In an earlier statement Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepes said the police received a tip-off from the surrounding community about a group of men allegedly mining chrome in teh area. “Police followed up on the information which led to the arrest of the suspects. During the arrest, police also confiscated three excavators, a Nissan NP200 bakkie and other mining equipment to the value of R10 million.

The Police investigations are still continuing.
