Limpopo police net over 2 000 suspects during latest joint operations

The police also seized firearms and ammunition, suspected stolen motor vehicles, various drugs and illicit cigarettes.

LIMPOPO –  A total of 2 159 suspects, between the ages of 19 and 46, were arrested this past week during ongoing joint police operations in the province. These operations were conducted in all five districts and were active from Monday, 5 October until the morning of Sunday, 11 October, said Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo in a statement on Sunday evening.

The operations comprised members from various police units including Limpopo Highway Patrol, Crime Intelligence Unit, Operational Respond Services (ORS),the tracking team and various members from crime prevention groups.

The  arrest of a 44-year-old woman within the Saselamani policing area on Wednesday, 7 October at around 00:30. “The police received a tip-off about a stolen vehicle and after a vehicle tracking company located the vehicle at Mhinga Zone 02,, police reacted and on arrival found two suspected stolen vehicles. The one vehicle contained a a bag of dagga and was positively linked to a case in Letsitele. The second vehicle was linked to a case in Eldorado Park in Gauteng,” said Mojapelo.

In Mokopane policing area, two men (aged 37 and 48) were arrested by members of Limpopo Highway Patrol and Mokopane police, during separate incidents between 10 and 11 October. “In both cases, the police received valuable information which led to the arrests. Two firearms were also recovered.”

The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Gen Nneke Ledwaba, welcomed the arrests and commended the various teams for their concerted efforts in fighting crime across the province and ensuring a safe environment for all citizens.

“The suspects were apprehended for charges ranging from murder, attempted murder, robberies, possession of illicit cigarettes, illegal immigration, possession of drugs, rape, sexual assault, assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), burglary residential and business, stock theft, malicious damage to properties, shoplifting, theft, drug related crime, driving under the influence of alcohol, public drinking, violation of protection order, possession of illegal firearms and ammunition, illegal trading in liquor to carrying of dangerous weapons.”

Some of the arrested suspects have already started appearing before the various magistrate’s courts across the province, Mojapelo concluded.
