Director arrested for fraud related to R3,2 million in Covid-19 claims

This morning the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation's (Hawks) investigation team arrested a 47-year-old Director of a company, for alleged fraud.

LIMPOPO – Provincial Hawks Spokesperson, Capt Matimba Maluleke said in a statement that the arrest was made barely three weeks after the community of Mtititi, outside Malamulele, made a complaint of fraud related to the Covid-19 social relief funds.

“Between April and August, the director of a drop-in centre allegedly claimed R3,2 million in Covid-19 social relief funds from the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) on behalf of her 242 former Malamulele-based Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers,” Maluleke explained.

He said investigations revealed that the workers’ contracts were terminated before President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the country will move into lockdown.

“It is further alleged that the claimed money never reached the pockets of the former workers.

The woman will appear in the Malamulele Magistrate’s Court on Monday,” Maluleke concluded.
