Former MP among three arrested for R4.8 million fraud case

These arrests follow an investigation into fraud charges related to the improper awarding of contract.

LIMPOPO – The Hawks, on Sunday, 4 October, confirmed that three more people have been arrested in connection with a case of tender fraud worth R4.8 million. On Friday, members of the Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit arrested a 53-year-old municipal manager from the province.

Over the weekend more arrests were made, including that of a former member of parliament, the former chairperson of the Makgatho Community Property Association and a bank employee, said Hawks Spokesperson, Capt Matimba Maluleke.

“The 70-year-old former chairperson was arrested at his home in Ga Makgatho village on Friday evening, while the 51 year-old bank employee handed himself over to the investigating team on Saturday in Polokwane. The former MP was arrested on Sunday morning at his home in Kanana village.” These arrests follow an investigation into fraud charges related to the improper awarding of contract.

“In 2018, the Hawks received a tip-off about money which was stolen by committee members attached to the Makgatho Community Property Association. The investigation revealed that between 2015 and 2018, the suspects had awarded a R4.8 million farming tender to a company linked to a family member of one of the suspects, without following due processes. It was further revealed that the company never rendered any service to the community.”

All four suspects are expected to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court, today, 5 October on charges related to fraud, corruption and theft.
