Mokopane cops sentenced to 5 years for corruption

The two police officers were arrested during an undercover operation in 2018.

LIMPOPO – The Mokopane Regional Court on Thursday convicted and sentenced WO Malose Frans Mogatla (52) and Sgt Madimetja Justice Lamola (37) for corruption.

The duo were arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation Unit in April 2018 during a undercover operation.

In an earlier statement, Spokesperson for the Hawks, Capt Matimba Maluleke explained that the unit received information about police officials who were demanding R500 from an undocumented foreign national, whom they had arrested in Mokopane.

“The victim had phoned his relatives to ask for the money. The matter was brought to the Hawks’ attention and an entrapment operation was carried out, resulting in the arrest of both Mogatla and Lamola,” he said.

The accused were out on R4 000 bail until they were convicted by the Mokopane Regional Court and each sentenced to 5 years direct imprisonment.The court further declared the men unfit to possess a firearm.
