Limpopo teenager charged with perjury after reporting a false case of kidnapping

Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo says the 14-year-old was arrested, charged and released into the custody of her parents.

LIMPOPO – A 14-year-old girl is expected to appear before the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court, soon, on a charge of perjury after opening a false case of kidnapping at the Tzaneen police station on Friday, 25 September.

According to a statement by Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, the teenager is one of 1 574 people who have been arrested during joint operations conducted across the province over the past week until today, 28 September.

“The teenager informed the police that she and her friend, a learner at a college in Tzaneen, were walking from school when unknown suspects, driving in a white panel van, grabbed her friend and forced her inside the vehicle,” Mojapelo explained.

He said the matter was prioritised and treated with urgency, only to establish that the case was based on a fabricated story.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that there was never a kidnapping and she was not even with a friend. She was charged with perjury and released into the custody of her parents. The matter has already been referred to the social worker for further assessment,” Mojapelo added.

Mojapelo told Review that they are waiting for an assessment report from the social workers.
