1 574 people arrested as Lim cops clamp down on crime

In one incident, a 34-year-old man and 25-year-old woman were arrested in the Mokopane policing area for the possession of illicit cigarettes worth R880 000.

LIMPOPO – Over the past week police in Limpopo have managed to arrest 1 574 people for various offences.

Joint operations were conducted across the province until this morning, 28 September, by means of roadblocks, stop and searches, tracing of wanted suspects, raiding of illegal businesses and intensive patrols.

Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said in a statement that police managed to confiscate 707 620 cartons of illicit cigarettes, 25 dangerous weapons, 8 180g of dagga, 2 907g of nyaope, 12 firearms, 46 knives, 2 596 520ml of liquor and vehicles.

“Members conducted 348 crime awareness campaigns, 2 821 compliance inspections at liquor premises, 23 drug operations, 215 liquor control operations, 86 roadblocks ,152 rural safety operations, 3 983 stop-and-searches and 290 domestic violence incidents attended. We also served 258 protection orders, closed 44 shebeens and searched 16 954 vehicles and 33 403 people while 1 972 traffic fines were issued,” he explained.

Mojapelo said those arrested were between the ages of 19 and 57 and were arrested for various offences which include murder, attempted murder, robberies, rape, sexual assault, possession of illicit cigarettes, illegal Immigration, poaching, failure to comply with maintenance order and the contravention of regulations under the Disaster Management Act and Road Traffic Act.

Mojapelo said in one incident a 34-year-old man and 25-year-old woman were arrested in the Mokopane policing area for the possession of illicit cigarettes worth R880 000.

“They were found in possession of about 90 large boxes containing illicit cigarettes and arrested. Meanwhile, three men between the ages of 25 and 45, were arrested for poaching in Vaalwater, near Lephalale, by members of the Endangered Species Unit and were assisted by the local police and private security companies. The members followed movement of these men until their white bakkie was spotted along the R33 road,” he explained.

He said a silencer, knife and rifle with ammunition were confiscated, while their white bakkie was also seized.

“The suspects have already started appearing before various magistrate’s courts across the province,” he concluded.
