Quarrel over masks: Limpopo soldier granted bail

LIMPOPO – A 29-year-old soldier appeared in court today on a charge of attempted murder following a shooting incident at a shopping complex in Mogwadi last week.

The SANDF member was arrested on Thursday following an incident, where a 27-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to his upper right leg. The victim was taken to the local hospital where he received medical attention.

In an earlier statement, Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said members of the National Defence Force were reportedly on duty to monitor compliance with Covid-19 regulations in the area when they approached a group of people, who were not wearing face masks. When asked why they were not wearing masks, an argument ensued and a shot went off,” Mojapelo said.

Capt Jaco Theunissen, Joint Operations Spokesperson of the SANDF, confirmed the incident and explained that the soldiers asked the people why they are not wearing masks and a quarrel broke out, after which the man sustained a gunshot wound in his upper right leg,” Theunissen explained.

The Morebeng Magistrate’s Court today, granted the accused R5 000 bail and the case was postponed to 28 October for further investigation.
