The Department’s Media Liason Officer, Mike Maringa says the number of motorists arrested for drunken driving has increased since Lockdown Level 2 was announced and that the number of fatal accidents is also on the rise. “Seven fatal accidents were reported in the province since Friday, 11 September, where reckless driving, speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol were cited as possible causes,” Maringa added.

Four pedestrians were killed during these incidents, among them a 13-year-old girl. “This incident happened on the N1-25 at Mookgophong, in the Waterberg district, while she was trying to cross the road,” he told Review.

Another pedestrian, a woman believed to be in her thirties, was killed on the N1-28 near a lodge in the Vhembe district, when a mini-bus allegedly knocked her down as she tried to cross the road.
