Working on Fire (WoF) in Limpopo has urged landowners and communities to be vigilant of the wildfires that are expected to increase across the province in the next three months.
Spokesperson for WoF in Limpopo, Mmatema Gwangwa said they are currently in the peak of the winter fire season and are experiencing a high number of wildfires in various regions of the province.
“Waterberg is one of the district municipalities that experiences a high number of wildfires between the months of August and November. Most of these wildfires are caused by lightening that occurs in the mountainous areas and are fueled by strong winds.
“We have organised workshops to train farmers and farm workers on basic veld and forest fire- fighting to enable them to control the fire from spreading faster while they are waiting for the assistance from our firefighters or the municipal teams,” Gwangwa commented.
She added that their core objective is to transfer fire-fighting skills to all members of the Fire Protection Association as well as the communities at large, with the intention of making sure that their fire season preparedness is up to scratch.
