Two traffic officials convicted for accepting bribes from speedsters

Two traffic officials were convicted of corruption by the Tzaneen Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

LIMPOPO – Mabogo Tshifhelimbilu (43) and Nhlamulo Shivambu (34) were among 13 officials who were arrested during Operation Siyabangena, which was conducted in the Tzaneen and Bolobedu, respectively.

In December 2017, the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit teamed up with the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) and Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) to root out corrupt officials in the province, said Hawks Spokesperson, Capt Matimba Maluleke.

“Instead of issuing summons to the motorists who contravened the Road traffic Act, the duo had opted to take gratification particularly from those who were caught exceeding the speed limit.”

The gratification was between R100 and R2 000 and the duo were each sentenced to R20 000 fine or four years imprisonment, half of which is suspended for five years on condition that they do not commit the same offense during the period of suspension.

Maluleke added that this brings the the total number of the officials convicted for corruption to seven.
