Weekend collisions claim 8 lives in Limpopo

Eight people died in separate head-on collisions since the start of the weekend.

LIMPOPO – In the latest incident four people died and a fifth person sustained serious injuries in a head-on collision on the R101 between Modimolle and Mookgophong on Monday morning. In a statement, Spokesperson for the Department of Transport, Mike Maringa said the incident between a bakkie and a sedan happened near Vlakfontein in the Waterberg District at around 06:00.

“Both drivers as well as two passengers from the sedan were certified dead on the scene. A passenger from the bakkie was rushed to Voortrekker Hospital in Mokopane in a critical condition.” Maringa says on Saturday two people lost their lives in separate incidents in the Capricorn and Mopani districts, respectively. One person was killed and two others sustained serious injuries in a head-on collision between a bakkie and truck on the R101 between Polokwane and Mokopane.

Another person died later the day during a separate head-on collision on Calvin Street in Namakgale township. “It is alleged the one vehicle overtook on a barrier line and collided head-on with the other. Preliminary reports indicate reckless driving as the possible cause of the accident.”

Meanwhile on Friday, 21 August a three vehicle collision claimed the lives of two people. “Is is alleged the driver of the bakkie was overtaking another vehicle on the barrier line when it collided head-on with the oncoming bus. The driver of the bakkie and a passenger were certified dead on the scene. The driver of the bus and 3 passengers escaped with minor injuries,” Maringa said.

Transport MEC, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya expressed her concern over the amount of head-on collisions reported and urged motorists to adhere to the rules of the road. “Motorists should not speed, drive recklessly or drink and drive.” She further sent her condolences to the families of those who died and wished a speedy recovery to those who were injured.
