Municipal Spokesperson, Thipa Selala said a preliminary report from the officers on scene suggest that it was a grass fire.
“The smoke emulated from a pile of tyres that were burning. Vermikuliet Street was closed to protect road users against the fire and has since been opened to traffic,” his statement read.
Selala urged residents to be vigilant against possible dangers that could cause fires as this was the third incident of the day, the other two being in Myngenoegen and Nirvana respectively.
“Replace any electrical cords that are worn, frayed, or damaged and make sure all matches, lighters and ashtrays are out of children’s sight and reach. Cigarette smokers are discouraged from disposing of cigarette butts in open fields, in particular where there is grass. Rather use a deep ashtray or smokers’ pole,” Selala added.
Fire related incidents can be reported to the municipal fire services call centre at 015 023 5403 / 065 967 9772.
