3 arrested in connection with mob justice murder in Matlala

18-year-old, Phuti Nkoana was set alight after the community accused him of murdering a 67-year-old woman in Prospect village.

POLOKWANE – The case against three men, arrested in connection with the murder of Phuti Nkoana, was postponed in the Seshego Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday 19 August. They face murder charges and are expected to apply for bail today.

Two men were arrested on Sunday, 16 August and another on Monday, 17 August. This after 18-year-old, Nkoana’s burnt body was found in Prospect village, last week.

According to Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, Nkoana’s murder is mob justice related. “Nkoana was accused by residents in the area for the murder of 67-year-old, Phuti Linda Segodi, whose body was found in her house on Wednesday morning, 12 August in the same village,” Mojapelo explained. He added that an inquest docket was opened after Segodi’s body was discovered, but it was changed to murder after further investigations revealed that she might have been strangled.

He added that two men were arrested on Sunday, 16 August and another on Monday, 17 August. “More arrests are expected as investigations continue,” his statement read.

The Provincial Commissioner of SAPS, Lt Gen Nneke Ledwaba has condemned what he called a “vigilante group” for taking the law into their own hands and instructed the police to hunt down the killers of both the deceased and bring them to book.
