Long queues as residents bulk buy alcohol

As of today, residents can purchase their favourite alcoholic beverages and cigarettes of choice at outlets across the city.

POLOKWANE – South Africans were relieved when President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a lift in the ban on alcohol and tobacco-based products. The ban was first put in place on 27 March, but the sale of alcohol was then permitted on 1 June. The ban had to be re-imposed on 13 July as a result of an increase in trauma cases which, in turn, put strain on the health system.

As expected, there were long queues of customers waiting to purchase alcohol this morning, with many buying in bulk. Review visited Makro where some customers explained that they were buying in large quantities to stock up for their businesses, which have suffered during the period of the ban.
