Limpopo Impala Cricket bags ‘Most Improved Province’ award

Chief Executive Officer of Limpopo Impala Cricket (LIC), Tommy Phiri believes the province has the ability to produce world class players and administrators.

POLOKWANE – Limpopo Impala Cricket can now brag with the title as the ‘Most Improved Province’, having received the award during the recent Cricket South Africa (CSA) members’ award ceremony. The results of the Incentive Scorecard system for 2020, which rewards members who exceed the basic delivery and compliance requirements of the CSA operating and funding objectives, were announced. Limpopo Impala moved up from 12th to seventh place.

Chief Executive Officer of Limpopo Impala Cricket (LIC), Tommy Phiri believes they have the ability to produce world class players and administrators. “This nod is a clear indication that we are capable of dominating the cricket scene in the country. This is the biggest accolade for us and we are adamant that it will spur us on. We want to have a strong representation of Limpopo cricket players in the national set up. We want all affiliations to feel our presence and it is possible,” he assured.

Administrators at Cricket South Africa who have passed through the LIC’s ranks are Kgomotso Volvo Masubelele (Protea men’s team manager), Tumi Masekela (Protea men’s strength and conditioning coach), Mashi Lestoalo (former women’s Protea player), Lerato Malekudu (former team manager for the Proteas) and Sedibu Mohlaba (Protea Women’s team manager).

Phiri emphatically stressed that the province has a lot to offer to CSA. “Limpopo is the hub of cricket and it has done much over the years to produce players and administrators. We still want to produce more. They are a good example for all aspiring cricketers and administrators from the province and we are encouraging them to continue with the good work.”

He stressed that he wants to make LIC one of the best unions in the country.

“We are seen as a small union and we want to change that. People don’t believe in us and we will turn things around. I want to bring that winning culture to the union. I want to make the staff, players and all the associates believe that they can achieve anything. I can only achieve that by ensuring that there are good relationships within the structure and ensure that the environment is challenging and prompt people to do better,” Phiri said.

He added that he aims to get rid of bad habits and ensure that there are cordial working relationships among personnel. “I want employees to believe they are the best. I want coaches and players to give hope to up-and-coming young players. We want to have operating offices and our facilities and we want our players to compete at higher levels and win tournaments and awards.”
