Bylsteel farm attack: 2 denied bail, 3rd suspect dies

The man was shot and injured during a shootout with the police on Wednesday morning.

LIMPOPO – Two of three men arrested earlier appeared in the Morebeng Magistrate’s court on Friday, 7 August for the farm attack in Bylsteel near Dendron earlier this week. The third man succumbed to injuries he sustained during a shoot-out with the police on Wednesday morning, in hospital yesterday evening, confirmed Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo.

The men were arrested in Polokwane on Wednesday morning hours after they attacked an elderly farmer (62) and his wife (58) in their home. During the incident the woman was reportedly raped and her husband severely assaulted. She was also shot in the leg. A 96-year-old woman who was also in the house didn’t sustain any injuries. The man and his wife were airlifted to a hospital in Polokwane.

The police were alerted and the suspects were spotted on the Matlala road by members of the Highway Patrol Unit. When they attempted to stop the vehicle they sped off, resulting in a car chase until they were cornered on the R101 south of Polokwane.

“Two of the men were arrested and a third, who shot at officers, was shot and injured and was taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday evening,” said Mojapelo.

 

The deceased has since been identified as Ayanda Thwanwe (33) from Kagiso in Krugersdorp, Gauteng.

People from as far afield as Hoedspruit and Tzaneen rallied together outside the court where the remaining two suspects, aged 29 and 38, appeared on charges of house robbery and rape. The court postponed their cases until 14 August and then they were remanded in custody.

They will also appear before Polokwane Magistrate’s Court for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and possession of stolen properties.
