ID matter settled 12 years later

A woman who had struggled for years to convert her dompas to a proper ID in order to access her husband's estate, finally received the document recently.

LIMPOPO – For 12 years, Mphephu Johana Nghonyama (68) had been struggling to get an ID from the Department of Home Affairs. “My hardship started after the death of my husband in 2008. I wanted to access the estate of my late husband, but when I received the document at the time, my name and ID were incorrect,” explained Nghonyama.

A visit to her local Home Affairs office, as well as the one in Pretoria, bore little fruit.

“I failed to access the estate and that led to me having to start working as a domestic worker to feed my two children. I even went to work as far as the Eastern Cape because I had no choice. It was very difficult for me to sleep at night.”

She said she hoped the nightmare would now be over.

Eddy Chauke, a resident from Hasani Dakari was informed of Nghonyama’s plight by the local civic structure.”We then contacted former minister, Faith Muthambi who is now the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee for Coghsta, and she referred us to Musa Chavani, the Chief Whip of the Portfolio Committee of Home Affairs.”

Chavani said they are glad they could speedily assist her. “I am happy because we managed to provide a solution and it is our duty to respond to these kinds of challenges,” said Chavani.
