Head-on collision between taxi, truck leaves 3 dead

Ten more people sustained serious injuries.

LIMPOPO – The police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after three people were killed in a head-on collision on Sunday, 2 August.

The incident between a taxi and truck happened at around 12:45 along the D3738 Giyani road between Xawela and Nkomo villages.

In a statement, Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapleo says preliminary investigations revealed that the driver of the truck lost control of the vehicle and collided head-on with the oncoming minibus taxi.

“The taxi driver and two passengers succumbed to the injuries sustained. A further ten passengers sustained serious injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.”

Mojapelo added that the truck driver was not injured.

“The exact cause of the incident will be determined through police investigation and the process of identifying the deceased is still underway.”

The Transport and Community Safety MEC, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya has since sent message of condolences to the families of the three people who died, and appealed to motorists to ensure that their vehicles are in good working condition at all times.
