Join the ‘Beat Coronavirus like a team sport’ initiative on Wednesday

Sikhaba iCovid-19 is calling on sports teams and communities around South Africa to join the fight and beat the virus like a team sport.

POLOKWANE – Now is the time to fight the Coronavirus according to the team at Sikhaba iCovid-19.

Sikhaba iCovid-19 is a national radio broadcast in partnership with the Department of Health and SABC Radio, which is supported by the Solidarity Fund.  They call on sports teams and communities around South Africa, to join the fight and beat the virus like a team sport.

“On Wednesday the #TeamSikhaba campaign will kick off on social media. We encourage South Africans to come together, like we have done during world cup events, and kick this virus to the curb,” said Kelly Burke, Account Director at Flux Communications.

Cape Town City Football Club captain and Bafana Bafana player, Thami Mkhize will start the conversation by encouraging and challenging others to help in this fight, by talking about this virus, how it has affected not only our health but our communities as well as our economy.

“We encourage people to know their status. We need to shibobo the stigma around having a positive Covid-19 result. We already have a selection of top sporting personalities and teams on board the campaign with us and we hope to have the phrase – Beating Coronavirus is a Team Sport – trending around the country. This will remind us that no matter our background or what our current situations are, we need to pull together now,” Mkhize explained.

Mkhize said every citizen has a role to play and a position to fill on the team. “We are not playing against each other or our government. Our opponent is the virus. Let’s make sure we are defending ourselves by wearing our masks, adhere to social distancing and regularly washing our hands with soap and water. We also need attack strategies; to tackle stigma, apathy and fatigue related to the virus.”

Join the #TeamSikhaba by helping to spread the word and share the importance of taking on Covid-19.
