Woman sentenced for smuggling explosives worth R1,2m

She was arrested at the Beitbridge border post last year.

LIMPOPO – The Musina Regional Court has sentenced the 38-year-old Linda Katiyo to 10 years’ imprisonment.

Katiyo, who hails from Zimbabwe, was convicted for smuggling explosives worth R1,2 million, according to Hawks Spokesperson, Capt Matimba Maluleke.

“On 28 April 2019, Katiyo was en route from Zimbabwe to Gauteng when she arrived at the Beitbridge border post with a suspicious-looking bag. The border police thoroughly searched the bag and found miscellaneous explosives that are usually used for illegal mining,” Maluleke explained.

Maluleke said Katiyo made several court appearances without getting bail until she was sentenced.

“The Hawks are determined to deal with cross-border crimes, particularly at the ports of entry,” Maluleke concluded.
