Meropa open to MVG members

In line with the Covid-19 lockdown regulations Meropa Casino has opened their doors, with a few exceptions

POLOKWANE – Meropa Casino is open for business, and tables and slot machines are operational at limited capacity to enforce the social distancing Covid-19 regulations.

The casino will be open from 12:00 until 20:30 daily. Slot machines will open at 12:00 until closing time and tables are open from 13:00.

To ensure social distancing is adhered to, every second machine has been switched off, and for additional protection the management have installed perspex shields between the machines.

“We have also removed seats from our tables and will operate at a maximum of four players per open table. Perspex shields have also been installed at tables to partition and protect players,” explained Peter Guthrie, Meropa Casino General Manager.

He added that at this stage only Sun MVG members will be allowed onto the casino floor.

However, anyone wanting to sign up for the MVG programme, is allowed to, but must be older than 18 year, and must provide an ID, driver’s licence or a valid passport.

“Guests may not enter our property without a mask or without completing the mandatory questionnaire at the entrance. They must also agree to temperature readings. Both inside and outside, visitors must observe social distancing and we encourage frequent sanitising of hands. Government requires all casinos to keep accurate daily records of anyone entering the property, including our employees, concessionaires and service providers,” he said.

He added that the medical screening questionnaire forms part of the Covid-19 protocols required by government, and therefore have to verify and record the identity of guests, as well as confirm their contact details.

He added that the casino floor is exempt from the Covid-19 regulation that prohibits gatherings of more than 50 people. “The limit of 50 people does not apply to the casino floor, but does apply to conferencing and food outlets. The number of people allowed onto a casino’s floor is determined by the floor space. To ensure that we do not exceed the permitted 50%, we have introduced a set number of entry tokens. On entry, each guest will receive a token. Once the tokens are all handed out, no new customers will be allowed to enter until someone leaves.”

He further explained that their surveillance and security departments constantly monitor the property to ensure that they are always compliant, that customers observe social distancing and that hygiene protocols are adhered to by everyone, including staff, at all times.

Guests are allowed to order food and drinks while playing, but within the regulations.

“At this stage guests are able to order food from our fast food menu and soft drinks, teas and coffees from Ngoma bar. They are permitted to temporarily remove their mask only to eat. Alcohol sales for onsite consumption is not permitted under level 3.”

Other facilities at the casino, including the Magic Company, Wild Thingz, Meropa Hotel, Harvest Grill and Wine, Banqueting, Jembe and the Crèche remain closed. “The property will adopt a staggered approach to opening based on business levels and demand. The onsite spa is open for business and operates from Monday to Sunday – 08:00 to 17:00.

Bookings are essential.
