Bakkie driver dies in N1 crash north of Polokwane

The road to Louis Trichardt was closed for several two hours to allow emergency service workers to attend to the injured and clear the scene.

POLOKWANE – One person has died and several persons were left injured following a head-on collision between a bakkie and bus on Wednesday, 8 July.

The collision happened roughly 12km out on the N1 north of Polokwane, at around 09:30 and Russel Meiring, ER24 Communication Officer said both vehicles had sustained a significant amount of damage.

“ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene at around 10:05 to find passengers from the bus walking around the scene. On closer inspection, medics found a man lying motionless inside the bakkie.”

Medics assessed the patient and found he had sustained numerous, fatal injuries. The man was declared dead on the scene.

Several other people were also treated for injuries, ranging from minor to serious and were transported to nearby hospitals.

The Spokesperson for the MEC of the Department of Transport, Mike Maringa said in a statement that preliminary investigations revealed that the bakkie was overtaking on the barrier line and collided head-on with a bus.

“The bus veered off the N1 and turned over a few metres off the road.”

He confirmed that the driver of the bakkie was certified dead on the scene and the injured from the bus were rushed to the hospital.

POLOKWANE –The N1 between Polokwane and Louis Trichardt has been closed following a two-vehicle collision on Wednesday, 8 July.

The collision happened roughly 12km out on the N1 north of Polokwane, at around 09:30.

According to reports, the incident left a bus overturned while a bakkie was also involved.

It is not yet clear on how many persons have been injured, but emergency medical services are on the scene.
