Cop nabbed after vehicle carrying illicit cigarettes, crashes

Illicit cigarettes with an estimated value of R100 000 were discovered inside the vehicle the police officer and a suspected accomplice were travelling in.

LIMPOPO – A 42-year-old police officer and his 25-year-old accomplice were arrested last night for the possession of illicit cigarettes.

The arrest of the constable, who is stationed at Maake outside Tzaneen, and his suspected accomplice was made along the R81 road in Mooketsi next to the weighbridge in the Modjadjiskloof policing area, when the sedan they were travelling in, crashed into a fence. Police Spokesperson,  Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said in a statement that they were travelling from the direction of Soekmekaar.

“Upon arrival, police found two occupants and during the initial investigations, 933 cartons and five packets of illicit cigarettes with the estimated value of R100 000 were discovered inside the vehicle,” Mojapelo added.

He added that the constable was disarmed and arrested on the spot together with his suspected accomplice.

“The suspects are expected to appear before the Modjadjiskloof Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, 7 July, on a charge of possession of illicit cigarettes, in contravention of the Disaster Management Act,” Mojapelo said.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service, Lt Gen Nneke Ledwaba emphasised that harsh action will be taken against police members who fail to serve the South African Police Service with integrity.

Police investigations are ongoing.
