LIMPOPO – Being diagnosed with HIV/aids or any other dreaded disease is not the end of the world, says the family of a man who recently committed suicide after he discovered he was HIV-positive.

The Vuwani police opened an inquest after the body of a man in Lwamondo-Mathule outside Thohoyandou was found hanging inside his bedroom last Saturday.

Limpopo Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said police were on their routine patrol duties when they received the call. “They swiftly responded to the information. They identified the man as Mashudu Nekhwevha (38). The EMS personnel arrived and took his body to the Tshilidzini state mortuary where a post mortem will be conducted to determine what had caused his death, as presently the cause of the death is unknown,” said Mojapelo.

The distraught mother of the deceased, Mary Nekhwevha said the circumstances surrounding the death of her son were unknown, but she says his demeanour changed after he recently tested positive for HIV/aids.

Suicide: watch out for these signs

“He thought life was over and was always complained that he was no longer treated with respect,” he said.

According to her, the family tried by all means to advise him that being diagnosed with a certain disease doesn’t mean the end of life, but to no avail.
