Police made a major breakthrough when they arrested one of their own for transporting and being in possession of illegal cigarettes along the N1 outside Polokwane on Tuesday evening.
According to Provincial Police Communications Head, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo the 41-year-old officer is stationed at Beitbridge Border Post and was stopped by his colleagues on patrol.
Mojapelo added that the officer was wearing his uniform and travelling in a bakkie. The vehicle was thoroughly searched and 20 boxes of illicit cigarettes with an estimated value of R350 000 were discovered. The officer was disarmed and arrested on the spot and the vehicle confiscated, according to Mojapelo.
He is expected to appear in the local magistrate’s court soon.
Provincial Police Commissioner Lt Gnl Nneke Ledwaba has commended the courageous members who diligently and without fear or favour performed their duties. He urged members to maintain discipline and integrity and actively participate in rooting out any corrupt activities wherever they are manifested.
