Municipal waste worker tests positive for Covid-19

The backlog in the collection of refuse will be dealt with this weekend, the municipality also confirmed.

POLOKWANE – The Polokwane Municipality on Friday morning confirmed that an employee has tested positive for Covid-19.

In a statement, Municipal Spokesperson, Thipa Selala explained that the employee is a temporary worker based at the Waste Management Services, responsible for daily waste collection.

“Accordingly, his work team and potential contacts will be immediately screened and tested to determine their status.”

He added that the municipality on Monday disinfected all vehicles and offices of the Waste Management Services to ensure that staff are safe. “The disinfection of offices and equipment is an ongoing process.” He added that all safety measures are in place and being implemented by health professionals and other relevant authorities, therefore there is no need to panic.

On Thursday evening the municipality announced that there was a delay in waste collection in the Nirvana, Westenburg, Ivy Park, Penina Park, Southern Gateway, the Aloes Estate and the Central Business District (CBD) areas and confirmed that this backlog will be dealt with today and throughout the weekend.

“Residents and business can be assured that waste collection services will be provided today and throughout the weekend to ensure that the backlog is cleared.” He advised residents to leave waste bags at the identified spots on their streets.

Selala added that the municipality endeavours to ensure safety among its employees and the visitors to the various municipal offices.
