Manhunt on for dangerous escapee

The man is considered dangerous and the police warn the public to not attempt to approach him.

LIMPOPO – The police have launched a manhunt for a 25-year-old trial-awaiting prisoner who escaped from the Hlanganani Police Station outside Giyani on Wednesday morning.

Knowledge Lucky Mashava faces nine charges related to murder, house and business robberies as well as burglaries at residential places. These crimes were committed between June 2018 and February this year in and around the Hlanganani, Giyani and Letsitele policing areas, says Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo.

Mojapelo added that preliminary investigations revealed that Mashava escaped the cells at around 05:45 after he used an unknown object to cut open a certain portion in the cell building.

Police says he is considered dangerous and anyone who comes into contact with him is advised to not try and apprehend him but to contact the police instead.

Mojapelo added that an internal probe to the circumstances surrounding his escape is underway. Anyone with information which can lead to the arrest of Mashavathe, can contact Capt Hlanganani Walter Marivate at 082 468 8673. Alternatively they can contact the 24-hour Crime-Stop number at 0860010111 or the nearest police station.

Mashavathe’s escape comes just over a week after the 40-year-old Owen Alexander escaped from the holding cells at the Mokopane Police Station. He was arrested on a number of burglary charges and escaped soon after he appeared in the Mokopane Regional Court.
