Illicit cigarettes discovered at fatal car crash

Three people died and one was critically injured after a vehicle overturned near Thohoyandou.

LIMPOPO – Three suspected cigarette smugglers died and another was critically injured after a vehicle overturned near Thohoyandou.

The incident happened along the public road at Gondeni village at around 23:00 on Wednesday.

The police were notified by passing motorists and arrived at the scene to find a wrecked silver Mercedes Benz sedan with four occupants.

Two of the men died on the scene and were declared dead by emergency medical workers on the scene. Two others had sustained severe injures and were taken to a local hospital for medical treatment, where one patient later succumbed to injuries sustained, says Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo.

The third occupant was admitted in a critical condition.

Mojapelo adds that upon further investigation of the accident scene, the police discovered multiple packets of illicit cigarettes inside the vehicle.

Investigations into the presence of illicit cigarettes in the vehicle is still underway.

The identity of the deceased and the injured occupant is also under investigation, he concluded.
