Govt warns: No soccer yet, it’s still lockdown

The departments of Transport and Community Safety and Sports, Arts and Culture warned that those who violate lockdown regulations will be dealt with harshly.

LIMPOPO – The public have been warned that anyone found in contravention of lockdown level three regulations will be dealt with harshly. This is according to a statement by the Department of Transport and Community Safety after having received complaints regarding soccer tournaments being staged throughout the province.

In a joint statement, the MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, and the MEC for Sport, Thandi Moraka reiterated that contact sport is still prohibited under alert level three.

Soccer tournaments are usually held on weekends. The Provincial Command Council has also raised concerns regarding the non-compliance and several hotspots have been identified and law enforcement agencies will be deployed to monitor and enforce compliance, Mavhungu-Ramakhanya said, adding: ”Those responsible for staging tournaments will be dealt with harshly”.

Moraka added that it is unfortunate that some citizens have a disregard for the lockdown regulations and undermine government’s efforts to curb the spread of Covid-19. She called on all communities and organisers to desist from staging soccer tournaments as it is still prohibited. She furthermore advised the public to continue adhering to lockdown regulations and to practice social distancing, sanitising and washing of hands at all times.

Communities are urged to report such unlawful gatherings to the police.
