POLOKWANE – After chilly temperatures battered the city from Friday, the South African Weather Service says cold weather is expected to continue over central and eastern South Africa from Tuesday, 16 June through to Thursday, 18 June.
Forecaster for the SAWS, Wayne Venter, said the cold weather that gripped parts of South Africa over the past few days is expected to continue this week where it will get worse. “This will be due to the cloudy conditions with showers of rain at times that are expected from tomorrow over parts of Limpopo, North West, Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga.
The cause, Venter says, is due to a cut-off low system which will be situated over the Free State on Tuesday and Wednesday and then moving slowly north-eastwards by Thursday. “This system is expected to exit the country on Friday, with temperatures improving to the high teens and low twenties from the weekend,” he said.
According to the weather service’s forecast, Polokwane will see temperatures in the high teens for the rest of the week, warming up over the weekend, with a 30% chance of rain forecast for Friday.
Tuesday and Wednesday will be the coldest days at 18 degrees, while Sunday will warm up to 22 degrees.
However, according to People’s Weather’s forecast, temperatures are expected to reach 15 degrees on Wednesday with a 10% chance of showers. The rest of the week will remain at 16 degrees, while Saturday will peak at 18 degrees and Sunday, 20 degrees.
“The South African Weather Service (SAWS) will continue to monitor any further developments relating to this weather system and will issue subsequent updates as required timely. Furthermore, the public are urged and encouraged to regularly follow the weather forecasts on television and radio issued by SAWS,” Venter said.
