Limpopo police officials found guilty of corruption

The duo were part of a six-man vehicle smuggling operation which operated at the Groblersbrug port of entry

LIMPOPO – The conviction and sentencing of two police constables for corruption has been welcomed by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation.

The constables are the last members of a six-man vehicle smuggling ring which was nabbed by the Hawks during a takedown operation on 23 January 2018.

The five officials, two former officials from Home Affairs Department and three police members who were attached to the Groblersbrug port of entry, and a civilian, were arrested for smuggling stolen vehicles through the port of entry to Botswana, says Hawks Spokesperson, AC Sampo Maaboyi.

Since the arrests, the two Home Affairs officials, Tryphina Tshabalala (31) and Kgomotso Morena (37), were found guilty and sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment each in August 2018. The civilian who impersonated a Home Affairs official, Doris Mashaka (38) was sentenced to 10 years for impersonation and corruption and on 17 March, Constable Matome Herman Mafa (40) was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment.

Constable Ratlou Alfred Moroana (37) and Constable Mahlatsi Phillip Tselane (34) appeared before the Mokopane Regional Court on Wednesday, 11 June. Moroana was found guilty for corruption and sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment and Tselane was also found guilty and is due for sentencing on 30 June.
