It really is that good: Mushudu

POLOKWANE – Mashudu Kekana makes a living selling braaied mielies and it truly is a hit with his customers.

Situated on the R71, just after the bridge leaving town en route to Mankweng, Mashudu is greeted with shouts of his name and every other vehicle passing by with a hoot of the vehicle.

The 26-year-old says the business was originally started by his mother before he and his younger brother took over.

Motorists on the R71 often stop to support Mashudu.

Every turn of the mealie makes your stomach grumble, he says.

Mashudu is one of many mielie vendors on the streets of Polokwane and the money helps to support 15 family members.

“The important thing for me is to keep the business going so that I can support my family and make sure that my siblings go to school and have food on their plates,” he explained.

Mashudu says he chose to sell braaied mielies as they are easy to source and the stock is easy to maintain.

“I source my mielies from surrounding farms. We don’t grow them ourselves but we have a reliable supplier who makes sure we always have fresh mielies to serve. My regulars can bare witness to the freshness of our mielies,” he added.

Mashudu told BONUS the main challenge he faces is not having a permit to operate where he does as he says he has been given the runaround from the municipality.

“I am trying to ensure that everything is above board,” he said.

He urges people to try his mielies, promising that they will not regret it and instead risk becoming regulars because his product is that good.

“I like to keep it simple, so my customers have a choice between aromat and normal salt to put on their mielies.”
