DJs and their gigs also under lockdown

Review asked some of the locals DJ's how they are surviving as we head into month four of the lockdown.

POLOKWANE – The nationwide lockdown has taken its toll on individuals and business sectors, especially those who make money from public gatherings and events.

Local DJs are among those who have severely been affected financially, as no gigs means no pay.

Many of them hoped that the lockdown would only last the initial 21 days but this was not the case.

Review asked some of the DJ’s how they are surviving as we had to month four of lockdown.

Dipuo Makhafola from Lebowakgomo says she’s still surviving from the money she made from the gigs she attended before the pandemic.
Pholosho Tshadi (Virus-soul) from Mashite says he never thought the pandemic would last this long and that because pubs are closed, there is no pay.
Tumelo Ramoroka (DJ Tumzalicious) from Makotse says it has been a tough time and that he is afraid that the money he has saved up might not be enough to last for the whole lockdown period. He adds however that we have to accept and adjust to the current situation.
Tebogo Mphahlele (Tebza the DJ) says he is lucky because he still lives with his parents. “Had it not been for my parents, I really don’t how I was going to survive this lockdown since my hustle is also under lockdown.”
Tebogo Ledwaba (DJ Milky Tee) from Matome says he managed to save up some money as he is also a photographer, producer and event organiser.

The Department of Arts and Culture recently announced a provincial Covid-19 relief fund for artists, athletes, coaches and technical officials across the province who have been financially affected by the pandemic. The department has set aside a budget of R8,3 million for this purpose and set out a list of guidelines as a criteria for those who qualify for the relief fund.

In a media statement by the department, artists are urged to register by sending the necessary documents, which include proof of loss of income, evidence of bookings that have since been cancelled, and confirmation of the financial impact.
