Elderly man nabbed for possession of firearm with expired license

The firearm licenses had last been renewed in 1997

POLOKWANE – A 62-year-old man faces charges of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, after found to be in possession of a firearm with an expired licence.

He was arrested at his house in Mashashane on Monday, 25 May after police responded to a complaint received about a man reportedly mishandling a firearm in the vicinity of his children.

Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo in a statement says the accused was found in possession of one Norinco pistol and ammunition, a plastic Norinco look-alike pistol, small flywheel and a bird hunting rifle. He was arrested and all the firearms confiscated.

Preliminary police investigations revealed that the firearm licences had already expired as they were last renewed in 1997.

The accused faces charges of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and will appear in the Seshego Magistrate’s Court this week.
