Muni warns business owners of ‘contract fraudsters’

The scam involves large ‘downpayments’ for fictitious municipal contracts

POLOKWANE – The Polokwane Municipality has warned local business people of con artists who portray themselves as municipal employees and award contracts that do not exist.

Municipal Spokesperson, Thipa Selala says the fraudsters lure people by informing them that they have been awarded contracts for projects by the municipality.

“It is thought that they then request the victim to deposit large sums of money, up to R500 000, into an account before the contract can be approved and signed. One such case has been referred to the law enforcement agency dealing with such criminal activities.”

Selala adds that operations that include the appointment of contractors for new projects are not essential services and have been halted. He advises anyone who is approached to report the matter to the police.
