Local teacher turns to tutoring during lockdown

Mathematics and life sciences teacher, Tiego Matibe Molatudi's service is aimed at learners who are unable to access educational material during lockdown so they don't fall behind when they return to school.

POLOKWANE –  Mathematics and life sciences teacher, Tiego Matibe Molatudi, believes teachers play a key role in instilling good values, developing basic skills and cultivating young minds, which is why he decided to assist learners in Polokwane through his tutoring service.

Tiego’s service is aimed at learners who are unable to access educational material during lockdown so they don’t fall behind when they return to school.

Originally from Burgersfort, Tiego now resides in Ga-Moisemane, Bochum and says he has noticed that most learners are struggling with mathematics and life sciences, not because they don’t understand it, but because they’re not given enough time to engage with the content. Tiego is a teacher at Modikwa Primary School in Ga-Ramaswikana and has been teaching since 2016.

He tells BONUS that he’s very passionate about both the subjects he teaches. “I love all aspects of biology that try to explain the human form and all its components and how we interact with our surroundings and other living things. Most importantly, how we all need each other to survive,” he said.

He adds that mathematics keeps him and his learners’ minds active and it also assists in always seeing every problem as solvable. “Mathematics teaches us problem- solving skills and I find the subject quite intriguing.”

Tiego believes that the teaching profession isn’t well respected and says the decision to give celebrities the platform to teach learners online wasn’t fair.

“There is a number of unemployed teachers in South Africa who are passionate about their craft. Giving celebrities, who are not qualified to teach, such an important function undermines emerging teachers who could use the opportunity to develop themselves further.”

He says that is what fueled his decision to start tutoring and that he is available to help any learner with their school work. “People shouldn’t feel ashamed to ask, I am willing to assist where I can, especially during the lockdown,” he said.
